Abstract: 

THE GENUS SALVIA BELONGS TO THE LAMIACEAE FAMILY AND COMPRISES NUMEROUS SPECIES THAT HAVE BEEN USED SINCE ANCIENT TIMES FOR THE TREATMENT OF SEVERAL DISORDERS. DITERPENOIDS, TRITERPENOIDS AND POLYPHENOLS ARE VERY COMMON IN PLANTS OF THIS GENUS. MOST SALVIA SPECIES HAVE BEEN EXTENSIVELY INVESTIGATED FOR THEIR POTENTIAL BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES [1].S. LERIIFOLIA BENTH, THAT WAS INTRODUCED IN THE IRANIAN FLORA IN 1982, GEOGRAPHICALLY GROWS IN THE SOUTHERN AND TROPICAL REGIONS OF THE KHORASSAN AND SEMNAN PROVINCES, IRAN. DIFFERENT PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF THIS PLANT, SUCH AS THE ATTENUATION OF MORPHINE DEPENDENCE, HYPOGLYCEMIC, ANALGESIC, AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITIES, AND ANTICONVULSANT, ANTIULCER, AND ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS, WERE EVALUATED [2].HEREIN, WE REPORT THE ISOLATION AND STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION OF TERPENOID CONSTITUENT OF S. LERIIFOLIA. FRACTIONATION OF A HEXANE EXTRACT OF THE AERIAL PARTS OF THIS PLANT LED TO THE ISOLATION OF LABDANE DITERPENOID. ITS STRUCTURE HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED BY HIGH-FIELD NMR TECHNIQUES (1HNMR, 13CNMR, 1H-1H COSY AND HMQC).

Abstract: 

BACKGROUND: SALVIA IS AN IMPORTANT GENUS OF THE LAMIACEAE FAMILY CONSISTING OF OVER 900 SPECIES. DITERPENOIDS, TRITERPENOIDS AND POLYPHENOLS ARE VERY COMMON IN PLANTS OF THIS GENUS. MOST SALVIA SPECIES HAVE BEEN EXTENSIVELY INVESTIGATED FOR THEIR POTENTIAL BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES. [1] S. LERIIFOLIA SHOWS STRONG ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITIES. [2] METHODS: THE AERIAL PARTS OF SALVIA LERIIFOLIA WERE COLLECTED FROM TROPICAL REGIONS OF THE KHORASSAN. AERIAL PARTS (4.5KG) WERE EXTRACTED FIVE TIMES WITH HEXAN. THE SOLVENT WAS EVAPORATED UNDER VACUMM TO GIVE 120 G OF EXTRACT. THE EXTRACT WAS CHROMATOGRAPHED ON SILICA GEL COLUMN (230-400 MESH) AND ELUTED WITH VARYING PORTIONS OF N-HEXANE, ETOAC AND METHANOL. AT THE END OF THIS A PURE POWDER WERE PURIFIED. ITS STRUCTURE HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED BY (1HNMR, 13CNMR AND HMQC), AS WELL AS HRESIMS.RESULTS: FRACTIONATION OF HEXANE EXTRACT OF S. LERIIFOLIA LED TO THE ISOLATION OF A TRITERPENOID (1).

Abstract: 

Salvia macrosiphon and Salvia limbata are important species of the genus Salvia which is belong to the family of Lamiaceae (Labiatae). The above mentioned species was collected from southeren parts of beautiful area of Zavarijan and Dodangeh region in thecity of Brujerd. Essencial oil was extracted from the above these two plants by the method of distillation with water in a Clevenger.The collected essential oil was kept in refrigerator and analized by GC/MS. Totally, 31 chemical compounds were identified in the essence of each species. The main components in S.macrosiphon were Limonen, Alpha-pinene, Spathulenol, Myrcene, Beta-pinene, Beta-caryophyllene and the major in S. limbata were Spathulenol, Limonene, Beta-caryophyllene, Myrcene, Beta-pinene and Alpha-pinene.

N-6 PUFAS AND N-3 PUFAS PLAY MULTIPLE ROLES IN CELL MEMBRANE STRUCTURE, LIPID METABOLISM, BLOOD CLOTTING, BLOOD PRESSURE, CONTROLLING INFLAMMATION, WHICH APPEAR TO CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR HEALTHY BENEFITS. IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT VARIOUS FATTY ACIDS HAVE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITIES [1]. SALVIA IS THE LARGEST AND THE MOST IMPORTANT GENUS OF THE FAMILY LAMIACEAE. PLANTS BELONGING TO THIS GENUS SHOW HIGH DIVERSITY IN THEIR SECONDARY METABOLITES AS WELL AS IN PHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECTS. SEVERAL SPECIES OF SALVIA ARE INCLUDED IN MANY PHARMACOPEIAS. THEY ARE USED FOR ALIMENTARY, PHARMACOLOGICAL AND COSMETIC PURPOSES.S. SPINOSA IS USED AS A MEDICINAL PLANT AGAINST DIARRHOEA, FOR PILES, CHEST, STOMACH PAINS AND AGAINST URINARY DISORDER [2]. LEAVES OF SALVIA NEMOROSA HAVE BEEN USED IN TURKISH MEDICINE TO STOP BLEEDING BY APPLYING EXTERNALLY [3]. THEREBY, THIS WORK IS TRYING TO INTRODUCE NEW SOURCES OF PLANT FATTY ACIDS. FIRSTLY, EXTRACTION AND DERIVATIZATION METHODS WERE OPTIMIZED ON SEVERAL SPECIES OF PLANTS OF THE GENUS SALVIA. THEN, METHYLATED FATTY ACIDS WERE ANALYZED QUALITATIVELY AND QUANTITATIVELY RESPECTIVELY BY GC-MS AND GC. FINALLY, THE PROFILE OF FATTY ACIDS IN TWO SPECIES OF SALVIA WAS DETERMINED.
